Michael Kay, Keep On Talking

This is unbelievably stupid.  Yesterday, Michael Kay made the accusation Cliff Lee of the Rangers has been cheating.  He said that the combination of the resin on his hat and sweat allows him to either load up the ball or get a better grip on it.  Yes, Michael Kay, Yankees announcers, accused star Rangers pitcher of cheating.  How stupid can you get?

There are two sides to this story, two different ways to look at this.  First, you're giving not only Cliff Lee, but the entire Rangers organization, extra motivation to beat you.  Your idiotic comments just pissed off Cliff Lee, the best big game pitcher in the game right now, and oh yeah, the same pitcher who absolutely shut you down last year in the World Series.  Of all people, I don't think he's one you want to get upset.  You can't hit him when he has nothing against you, and now you give him bulletin board material?  Not the greatest move.  The Rangers as a team can use it too.  One of your guys accused one of their guys of cheating.  They're going to take offense to that, and they're all going to be playing with extra motivation.  I'm not sure that motivation will be enough for them to come back from this 1-0 hole, especially after an unbelievable choke last night, but still.  Take your win, and be happy with it.  The series is in your hands.  Don't open your mouth and give them any more reason to want to beat you.  It's bad enough your the Yankees.

The other reason his comments are so idiotic is because Cliff Lee is almost guaranteed to be a Free Agent this year, the best Free Agent in his class, and who's the favorite to landing him this winter?  Oh yeah, Mike!  It's your Yankees!  So, you're going to accuse him of cheating before he plays you, and before you propose signing him?  Good idea.  Now I'm not saying this is going to effect what he does this winter, he may not care or put it against them, but come on man, why would you ever take that chance?  He's the best big game pitcher in the game right now, you've expressed mutual interest in playing for each other next season, and you go out and piss him off by calling him a cheater!  Hundreds of millions of dollars will probably make up for it, but I don't think it's a risk you want to take.

Michael Kay, you're definitely my goat for the day.  I have no idea how you could've thought this was a good thing to say.  As my favorite radio voice, Colin Cowherd, says, "Say it out loud."  Mike, if you just did this, even if you didn't realize how dumb of an idea it was, hopefully for your Yankees someone else would hear and say, "Shut up you idiot, that's one of the worst ideas you've ever had."  It's a no win situation if you're the Yankees.

If you're going to call him a cheater, clearly you just don't want him next year, and he wouldn't be appreciated anyway.  Hey, if you don't want him, I'm sure my Mets will take him if they have to, he's said he wanted to come to New York, there'd be a freaking parade of blue and orange if that ever happened.  Once again though, if you don't want him because he's a cheater, my Mets will be more than happy to take him off your hands.
